Processing and Evaluating Certification Exams

  • Certification Examinations taken at any examination site must be returned to the MTNA Headquarters before they are evaluated.
  • Certification Examinations are given a number and sent to two evaluators for evaluation. No names are to appear on the examinations so as to assure fairness and consistency in evaluation.
  • To avoid improprieties, Evaluators should not evaluate certification examinations for those candidates for whom they have served as the administrator/monitor. In that way, Commissioners will be less apt to find themselves “between a rock and a hard place.”
  • Send evaluators cover letter (Letter # 8) with a chart that contains a list of numbered Certification Examination(s) with the Certification Examinations to be evaluated. The evaluators  record percentages and point grades given for each examination on the letter/chart.
  • If a candidate’s Certification Examination result is FAIL, the evaluator must write an explanation of the reason(s) why with the Examination number on a second page of Letter #8.
  • Evaluator makes a copy of the letter/chart, and any explanation written for a failed examination,
for their file and keeps it for three months.
  • Evaluator first sends Letter #8 with Certification Examination evaluation results, including reasons for FAILURE on second page if necessary, to appropriate MTNA Staff via e-mail attachment.
  • Evaluator returns evaluated examination(s) with answer sheets to MTNA on or before the due date (within two weeks) in return, self-addressed envelope provided.
  • MTNA Staff prints out hard copy of Letter #8.
  • Staff uses the evaluator’s written explanation for the FAIL in the official letter (Letter # 9) notifying the certification candidate of his/her unsuccessful examination results.
  • In order to maintain the integrity of the MTNA Professional Certification Examinations evaluators are to make NO copies whatsoever of the certification examination and are to return all certification materials to MTNA.
  • The MTNA staff follows-up on Certification Examination results.
  • PASS for the Certification Examination is 75% or above of the examination’s total points. If both evaluators pass or fail the examination, notify the certification candidate of the results with either Letter #9 or #10. Letter #9 should contain reasons for failure written by the evaluators found on back of Letter #8. Copy Letter # 10 to NCC Chair and appropriate Division Commissioner and State Certification Chair.
  • If either one of the evaluators score a Certification Examination 74% or below, then send the Certification Examination (minus any percentage and point scores or written comments from the first two evaluators) with Letter #8 to a third evaluator for clarification, accuracy and a consensus.
  • The third evaluator sends Letter #8 with evaluation results and if necessary, reasons for FAILURE, to MTNA Staff via e-mail attachment.
  • When a consensus is reached, notify certification candidate of the results with either Letter #9 or #10. Letter #9 should contain reasons for failure written by the evaluators on back of Letter #8. Copy Letter # 10 to NCC Chair and appropriate Division Commissioner and State Certification Chair.
  • NO Certification Examinations will be returned to certification candidates
  • Only PASS or Fail will be given to candidates as the result of Certification Examinations.
  • A candidate will know the results of his / her examination in approximately eight weeks.
