Mui Wins MTNA Junior Composition Competition

March 1, 2016

Holden Mui of Lisle, Illinois, won first place in the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) Junior Composition Competition for his piece Aquarium.

Mui, 13, is a seventh grader at Kennedy Junior High School. He studies piano with Kate Nir and composition with Matthew Hagle at the Music Institute of Chicago. He has previously been a national finalist in MTNA’s composition competition. Mui received first place in the Society of American Musicians Competition primary division in 2013 and first place in the junior division in 2014. Mui’s favorite composer is Ravel. His other interests include mathematics and computer science.

The MTNA Composition Competition was judged prior to the 2016 MTNA National Conference, which will take place April 2–6, at the Grand Hyatt San Antonio in San Antonio, Texas. The Junior Division is open to composers ages 11–14. As a national competition winner, Mui receives $1,000, provided by Morty and Iris Manus of Alfred Music Publishing. His composition will be performed in the winners’ recital on Sunday, April 3, at the conference.

The three-tiered MTNA competitions begin at the state level. First-place winners of each state’s competition advance to a division competition. Division winners compete in the national finals.
