Yeong Wins MTNA Elementary Composition Competition

March 1, 2016

Helen Yeong of Laguna Niguel, California, won first place in the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) Elementary Composition Competition for her piece One Lazy Day.

Yeong, a 9-year-old fourth grader at Laguna Niguel Elementary School, began studying music age 5 and currently attends the Irvine Yamaha Music Center, where she studies piano and composition with teacher Su-Shing Chiu. Yeong has won several awards, including first place in the Arts Club Piano Competition, first place in California Association of Professional Music Teachers Contemporary Festival and third place in the Music Teachers of California Composition Contest. She also enjoys playing violin, reading and swimming.

The MTNA Composition Competition was judged prior to the 2016 MTNA National Conference, which will take place April 2–6, at the Grand Hyatt San Antonio in San Antonio, Texas. The Elementary Division is open to composers ages 5–10. As a national competition winner, Yeong receives $500, provided by Morty and Iris Manus of Alfred Music Publishing. Her composition will be performed in the winners’ recital on Sunday, April 3, at the conference.

The three-tiered MTNA competitions begin at the state level. First-place winners of each state’s competition advance to a division competition. Division winners compete in the national finals.
