Editing the New Edition of Beethoven’s Piano Sonatas

Presented November 22, 2024
Presented by Dr. Norbert Gertsch & Brendan Fox
G. Henle Verlag, Hal Leonard

Explore the fascinating world of Beethoven’s piano sonatas and their definitive editions. Since its inception in 1952–1953, Henle Publishers’ Urtext edition of Beethoven’s Sonatas, known as the “Wallner” edition, has been the global standard for musicians. This revered edition has undergone continuous refinement over decades, cementing its status as the go-to resource for these timeless masterpieces. However, as the landscape of musical scholarship evolves, so must our approach to these iconic works. In 2003, Dr. Norbert Gertsch, then editor-in-chief at Henle, recognized an opportunity for further enhancement. Collaborating with world-renowned pianist and Beethoven specialist Murray Perahia, Dr. Gertsch initiated an ambitious project to elevate the edition to new heights. Dr. Gertsch, along with Brendan Fox, will offer a rare behind-the-scenes look at the creation of this groundbreaking new edition. They will explore the impetus behind revisiting these revered works, the meticulous process of crafting the new edition and the unique challenges encountered along the way.

What Does Cooking an Italian Meat Sauce Have in Common with Teaching Effective Practice Strategies?

Presented October 8, 2024
Presented by Helen Marlais
The FJH Company, Inc.

Ever wonder what making a full-bodied Bolognese has in common with teaching effective practice strategies? One starts with a list of ingredients. Then, understanding the order of ingredients cooked in a pot is imperative to the success of the finished meat sauce. Likewise, using an ingredient list of the four different stages of learning a piece, and learning how to apply the most effective piano practicing strategies for each stage of learning helps us guide our students to pianistic success. Dr. Helen Marlais from The FJH Music Company will demonstrate essential piano practice strategies and when to use them in the learning process. She will play works from the artistic series, the Succeeding at the Piano method, and the FJH Pianist’s Curriculum.
