The membership year for Active, Senior, International, and Retired members is July 1 through June 30. Collegiate Membership runs October 1 through September 30.

MTNA offers discounted active membership to graduating collegiate members in good standing. When a current collegiate member graduates, they may contact the national office to request half-off national dues for one year of active membership. Some states offer a discount as well. No, dues are not prorated.

Yes, members may select to have their National, State, Local and Collegiate dues automatically renewed each year.

Yes, members will receive their physical membership card in the mail within 4–6 weeks from dues payment.

Members who join or renew online receive an email receipt immediately upon dues payment. If you paid via check or over the phone, you may log into your member account and print a receipt or request one from the national headquarters.

MTNA Professional Certification is not automatic upon becoming a member. Certification is a professional designation (“Nationally Certified Teacher of Music”) that must be applied for. Learn more about Certification here.

If you are certified, you will automatically be listed in the Find a Teacher directory (unless you opt out).

MTNA offers a retired membership status upon request to members who are 65 years or older and have held continuous membership for 20 years. Retired members may not hold elected office at the division or national levels and cannot enter students in MTNA competitions. State and local affiliates may have similar restrictions. At this time, MTNA does not offer studio or group membership; anyone wanting to receive member benefits must join as an individual.
