MTNA-Print Version
The Year of Collaborative Music

MTNA is embarking on a celebration focused on collaborative music making—the Year of Collaborative Music (YCM). Launching at our March 2010 MTNA National Conference in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the Year of Collaborative Music will continue through the year and culminate during the March 2011 MTNA National Conference in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Our Mission Statement The Year of Collaborative Music will celebrate the importance of collaborative music making in society and in the profession worldwide. Begun by collaborative pianists within MTNA and led by significant national and international music associations, YCM will promote the diversity of ensemble playing opportunities available to musicians of all ages and skill levels.
For this project, collaborative music is defined broadly as any activity involving two or more musicians, particularly one-on-a-part, non-conducted ensembles. The umbrella definition would include professionals, amateurs, families, retirees, students of all ages or any combination of interested musicians.
Who is involved? MTNA is encouraging other professional music organizations to join us in this celebration and invites your group, institution or association to explore how you might focus on collaborative music making within that time period. Collaborative Music will promote the future of all of our organizations and the profession; by working together on this project, we will help advance the power of music in society.
One big day, January 22, 2011 - Mark Your Calendar As a part of the yearlong celebration, we have designated January 22, 2011, as the International Day of Collaborative Music (IDCM), one special day devoted to collaborative music making throughout the world. Hosting simultaneous performances around the world would clearly bring attention to the importance of making music together. We invite your organization to consider joining us in scheduling some type of collaborative performance event on this date and promoting it through your local media.
